In my 43 years as a psychologist, I have offered individual and couples counseling in my private practice and specialized in behavioral and holistic medicine, helping clients with chronic pain and stress-related disorders, including those facing a life-threatening diagnosis and their families.
Whatever the difficulties and challenges that you are currently facing in your life, I offer an approach designed to help each individual quiet their mind and body so they may discover the sources of imbalance that lie beneath the painful physical and emotional symptoms that they are experiencing. Clients are encouraged throughout the therapy process to use their time of distress as a spiritually auspicious time to increase their self-understanding by opening to the deeper dimensions of themselves. Treatment of the painful symptoms and personal transformation are the goals.
I am devoted to helping clients integrate the process of personal development and spiritual awakening into their lives. A long-time practitioner and teacher of meditation, I have developed the Integrated Therapy Program for Transforming Stress and Pain while serving as the director of an outpatient university hospital pain clinic.
As a professor of psychology at various universities and graduate psychology institutes, I have authored and edited a variety of published books including Opening to Dying and Grieving: A Sacred Journey, Changing Faces of Therapy: Evolving Perspectives in Clinical Practice and Assessment, Metaphors of Consciousness, and Phenomenological Inquiry: Existential and Transpersonal Dimensions. I currently serve as director of the Awakening Counseling Center in Discovery Bay, CA, out-patient telehealth psychotherapist for Executive Mental Health, and staff psychologist at a Bay Area skilled nursing facility.
